Attempt to ease pressure at notorious junction

A BID is being made to prevent traffic snarl-ups at a notorious junction in the centre of Cushendall.

During peak times the junction of Mill Street and Bridge Street beside the Curfew Tower can be transformed into a bottleneck.

But now a plan is being made to turn Mill Street Car Park from Bridge Street to Mill Street into a one-way through road.

Moyle Council officer Aidan McPeake said consultations have taken place with Roads Service officials and he said it was felt the proposed system will ease congestion at the Curfew Tower.

Mr McPeake said the congestion is a major problem and there will be nothing lost by trying out the new system for a period at least.

Cushendall Independent councillor Colum Thompson said the work is worth trying to see how it goes as the problem can’t be any worse than it is.

Glens Independent councillor Randal McDonnell said people talk about tourism but he said there are traffic hold-ups in Waterfoot, Cushendall and Ballycastle because of on-street parking.
