The court heard police stopped a car being driven by Michael Groogan (25), of Cordarragh, Draperstown, at High Street, Draperstown, at 11pm on October 14 2013.

A prosecuting lawyer said a roadside check of the defendant’s documents were carried out and showed he was not insured.

The lawyer added that it transpired his insurance had lapsed at 12 noon that day.

Admitting the offence, Mr Stephen Atherton explained that Groogan was just about to travel to Australia on a work visa.

He said when the defendant was stopped by the police he believed his insurance was not due to lapse until later in the day. District Judge Alan White said in the circumstances he would impose a nominal fine of £25.
