Austrian link to new artwork

Familiar landmarks from the town feature in a new piece of artwork which now has pride of place in Whitehead Primary School.

Year 7 Whitehead PS pupils took part in Downshire School’s Primary Art Programme.

As well as the school badge, the seaside town is identified through the Marine Parade buildings and steam rail connection.

The Islandmagee Road school welcomed Downshire School pupils into Mrs Thompson’s and Mrs Blair Garvey’s classrooms to take part in the initiative.

“Pupils produced a fantastic piece of art based on local landmarks with the primary school badge at the heart of the piece,” a statement from Downshire explained.

“Designed by Mrs Thacker, one of Downshire School’s art teachers, the piece was influenced by the Austrian artist Hundertwasser and is one of a number of pieces produced in collaboration with several primary schools in the local area as part of the programme.”

Year 13 Art & Design pupils Caitlin White, Hannah Welsh, Hollie McArthur and Kayleigh Clarke assisted the classes in their oil pastel piece and accompanied principal Jacqueline Stewart and Mrs Thacker to Whitehead to present the piece during a special assembly.

Prizes were also presented to colouring competition winners who excelled in completing their own version of the design.

“Well done to year 6 pupils Robbie Morrow and Alayah Collins and to year 7 pupils Caitlin McManus, Harry Smith, Chelsea Robinson and Tom Kennedy.”

“The artwork is to join the many excellent pieces already displayed in Whitehead Primary School and will hopefully be enjoyed by all who visit the school for many years to come,” the Downshire statement added.
