Author on the hunt for POWs

AN author has appealed for help to find former German Prisoners of War living in Northern Ireland.

Between 1944 and 1948 over 13,000 prisoners were held captive in several camps across the province.

The Elmfield Camp in Gilford and the Gosford Camp in Markethill would have held some of those captured.

The prisoners wore white and grey armbands and were former infantrymen of the Wehrmacht, sailors of the Kreigsmarine and Luftwaffe aircrew.

It's thought that 62 years after the camps closed many of the soldiers returned to Germany some may have stayed behind to have families and forge a life in Ulster.

Author John McCann is on the lookout for information from anyone who may have had a relative that was imprisoned in one of these camps or can help with the research for his book.

John can be contacted on 078 8573 1202 or email [email protected].
