Autumn finish for Pump House

Work is well advanced on the riverside Portadown Pump House to transform it into a cafe/restaurant with seating for up to 30 people.

Renovations on the building, which is situated close to the Bann Bridge, started at the end of May and work is due to finish in early autumn.

The council will then go out to tender to seek a tenant to run the facility.

The main feature is an extension boasting floor to ceiling windows to make the most of the riverside setting close to the Bann Bridge.

There will also be environmental improvements including landscaping and lighting.

The £230,000 scheme is being part-funded by the Department of Communities and the project is being managed by ABC Council.

Councillor Colin McCusker, chairman of the economic development and regeneration committee, said, “The Pump House is in a prime location on the edge of the River Bann and complements the developments that are currently taking place along the River Bann and the recently developed old town quay.

“The building dates from 1929 and is quite historic for Portadown, so it is wonderful to see this industrial heritage along the Bann being reactivated.

“It is an ideal place for visitors to stop, relax and enjoy the riverside as well as being just a short walk from Portadown town centre.”

The Pump House was built by the then Portadown Urban District Council as part of a new sewage and drainage scheme.
