Autumn planting tips at Garden Club

NIGEL Austin from Samore Plant Centre, Martinstown, was the speaker at the October meeting of Ballymena Garden Club.

Nigel assisted by his wife, Lorna, began by demonstrating layer planting of tulips, narcissuses and crocuses in a large earthenware pot to provide a succession of blooms throughout the spring.

He then reviewed the weather during last winter when a record breaking cold spell damaged or killed many tender plants that had become accustomed to growing in our gardens.

Tips were given to members on how to protect tender plants in view of predictions that the weather this winter may follow a similar pattern.

A question time followed when members drew on Nigel’s expertise to advise them on their gardening problems.

The Club’s next meeting will be held on Monday, November 7, at 7.30 pm in Houston’s Mill, Broughshane, when James Milliken, representing the National Trust in Northern Ireland, will give a talk on “The North Coast”.

New members are always welcome at the club as member embark on their series of monthly talks on gardening and environmental themes.
