Award winning young artists

Ballymena Festival celebrated its centenary this year and to mark the occasion, the Enkalon Foundation offered to sponsor an Art Competition.

The aim was to encourage budding artists to reflect on the history and ethos of the Festival in Ballymena. The incentive was not only the opportunity to have their work displayed in the Braid Arts Centre, but also the possibility of receiving generous prizes offered by the sponsors. Rosalind Lowry, Arts and Events Development Officer, had the difficult task of judging the entries because, she admitted, the standard had been so high.

Her decision was to award the following prizes: 5-6 year- first Aisling Ardiff, St Colmcille’s Primary School; Second Maria Logan, St Paul’s Primary School; Third Maura McErlean, St Paul’s Primary School. Highly commended: Shannon McGowan and Carla O’Brien, St Paul’s Primary School

7-9 years: First- Grace Law, St Paul’s Primary School; Second- Olivia Marks, Buick Memorial Primary School; Third- Rachael Calderwood, Buick Memorial Primary School.

Highly commended: Shannon Laverty, Camphill Primary School, Sienna Crawford, St Colmcille’s Primary School, Annie McAteer, St Paul’s Primary School, Ryan Laverty, St Colmcille’s Primary School.

10-12 years: First- Maeve McAuley, St Paul’s Primary School, Second- Grace McVeigh, St Paul’s Primary School; Third- Ben Fleming, Ballykeel Primary School.

Highly commended: Naomi Mitchell, Ellie-Jo Butler, St Colmcille’s Primary School, Abigail Hutchinson, Troy Evans, Kian Rafferty, Ballykeel Primary School, Taylor Nutt, Anya Bishop, Anna Patterson, Sophie Charleton, Camphill Primary School. Thanks to the generosity of the Enkalon Foundation, each prize-winner received a gift voucher and, in addition, St Colmcille’s Primary School submitted the winning entry for Key Stage 1 and St Paul’s Primary School entered the best picture in Key Stage 2. Each school received £150 worth of art materials. The prizewinning entries will be on display in The Braid Town Hall, Museum and Arts Centre throughout the Centenary Festival coming up in February and March.
