Back door darkno safety issue

THE back doors to homes in a Londonderry estate have been plunged into darkness after street lights were removed but Roads Minister Danny Kennedy said this should have no significant impact on the safety of residents.

Lighting to the back entrances of homes in the Galliagh Estate has been removed as part of ongoing improvements.

SDLP MLA Mark H. Durkan asked the Minister what impact he thought the removal of lighting would have on residents’ safety.

Mr Kennedy replied: “Given that all houses in the area will have improved street lighting on the roads and footpaths to their front accesses, it is considered that removal of the old street lighting from rear pathways should have no significant impact on the safety of residents.”

He said Roads Service was renewing the lighting system in Galliagh to upgrade it to modern performance, safety and reliability standards.

“The new street lighting will comply with current Roads Service policy and standards. Under that policy, roads and footpaths, which only give rear access to properties or are alternative routes to already lighted roads or footpaths, will generally not be lit,” he explained.
