Bail application turned down in prison officer murder case

Thirty-three-year old Sean McVeigh, Victoria Street, Lurgan, appeared on videolink this morning (Friday, March 7) at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

The prosecution opposed bail saying there was a risk of flight, the commission of further offences and possible interference with witnesses.

A defence solicitor said McVeigh had strong links with the Lurgan area and suggested he could be released with strict bail restrictions.

The prosecution alleged the defendant was closely associated with Colin Duffy and it was the police case there was an active terrorist cell in the Craigavon area responsible for a number of terrorist acts.

McVeigh was refused bail and was remanded in custody to March 21.

At the same court Damien Joseph McLaughlin, (37), charged with transporting the car used in the murder across the border, and Fiona McFadden (29), from Lurgan, charged with providing a false alibi, were also remanded until March 21.
