Ballintoy path a ‘health hazard’

SINN Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, has called for urgent action to be taken to address the sewerage discharge on the cliff path at Ballintoy.

Cllr McShane was speaking after meeting Council’s Environmental Health department at the site between the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and Ballintoy’s Harbour Road.

She said: “This is an intolerable situation that has been going on too long. There is a clear problem with the sewerage discharge and is my view presenting a health hazard to the thousands of visitors, residents and walking groups who trek this path on a regular basis.

“This is one of the most stunning and scenic walking routes in Ireland which must be promoted, however the odour and spray from the sewerage in the middle of the path is at the very least discouraging and if not dealt with soon, could be hazardous.

“I have asked the Council’s Environmental Health department to raise this issue with NI Water as a matter of urgency and to get this issue addressed once and for all.”
