Stephen McGowan of SPR McGowan Tree Services donated a tree to the community association and on Saturday a small plaque was unveiled, proclaiming that the community had its roots in the past but was reaching towards the sky.

Valerie Beattie, chairperson of the group, said they were delighted to have the donation from Stephen, who is also a member of the association.

“Stephen felt he wanted to do something to help the community and this tree will be a lasting and visual amenity for Ballycarry, so we are very grateful,” she said.

During the formal handover last weekend, Mrs Beattie read James Orr’s poem ‘The Tree’, which paid tribute to a tree the poet was familiar with on the outskirts of the village.
