Ballycastle super-loo is ‘too slow for tour buses’

IT is reputed to be the busiest ‘superloo’ in Northern Ireland but now a councillor says its maximum usage time of 15 minutes per person is too slow to catercoachloads of tourists who need to ‘spend a penny’.

Cllr Padraig McShane was speaking at a meeting of Moyle Council regarding the Automated Public Convenience toilet at the carpark beside the marina in Ballycastle.

He wants to see a bigger toilet block built in the area so bus tours can pull in and passengers can avail of several cubicles instead of just one.

He said: “If a bus load of 50 people comes in to Ballycastle they simply don’t have the time for six or seven people to even use that toilet. It is unfeasable and we need a new toilet block.”

The councillor says a new toilet block in the seafront area should also have a shower facility to cater for beach-users and people like surfers.

Cllr Randal McDonnell agreed that the Council should be providing adequate public toilets “instead of all sorts of nonsense over the years”.

Council Chairperson Cara McShane said the Ballycastle superloo is the best used in the North.

She joked that the area is ‘flush’ with toilets but believed the only area on the whole of the Antrim Coast Road which had nearby provision for buses to pull in is Carnlough.

Moyle Council’s Director of Environmental Services, Aidan McPeake, said perhaps a sign is needed at the super-loo to direct people to nearby toilets.
