When Ballyclare couple Nigel and Florence Scarlett celebrated their recent marriage, Northern Ireland Hospice was very much at the heart of their celebrations.

The hospice cared for Nigel’s late wife and father, and also greatly supported the
family circle during their illnesses.

With first hand experience of their unique specialist
service, Nigel and Florence decided to request donations in lieu of wedding gifts to
commemorate Nigel’s late
wife and his father
whilst helping to ensure that hospice care is available
for other local families who need it, both now and in the future.

Sharon Gorman, donor officer with the charity,
said: “Thanks to their
kind-hearted request and
the immense generosity of their family and friends £2,400 has been raised.

“Requesting donations in lieu of wedding gifts was a meaningful way for them to support Hospice which will greatly help us to grow and develop our service.

“Nigel is a committed day hospice volunteer who knows just how much we rely on community support and how this substantial donation will make an immense difference to the lives of our patients and their families.

“On behalf of Northern Ireland Hospice I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to them for their support and to wish them every future happiness.”

New state-of-the-art hospice facilities are currently under construction at Somerton Road in north Belfast. Work on the multi-million pound project is expected to be completed next year.

The new-look Hospice has been designed to care for people with complex care needs and the growing numbers of people in need of end of life care due to an ageing population. It will be the first dementia-friendly hospice in the UK and Ireland.

Anyone who would like to find out more about ‘Giving in Celebration’ at special occasions such as a wedding or an anniversary, should log on to the Northern Ireland Hospice website at nihospice.org or contact Sharon Gorman on 028 9078 1836.
