Ballyclare criminal damage condemned

Local political representatives have condemned several incidents of criminal damage which occurred in Ballyclare in recent weeks.

Detailing the incidents, a spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Police in Newtownabbey are appealing for information following two incidents of criminal damage at Sixmile Leisure Centre in Ballyclare recently.

“Windows were broken in both incidents, which were reported to police on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, September 11. Both incidents are believed to have happened sometime overnight prior to being reported.

“Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of the leisure centre on the nights in question, or anyone who may have information that could assist in the police investigation should contact police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference numbers 544 of 20/09/16 or 535 of 11/09/16. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“In a separate incident of criminal damage, a window of commercial premises in the Park Street area of Ballyclare was broken sometime between 9.50pm on Tuesday, August 16 and 6.30am the following day. Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting reference number 286 of 17/08/19.”

Commenting on the recent incidents, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr John Scott said: “I understand that four windows were smashed in the incidents at the leisure centre. These panes of glass cost £400 a time. The people who are doing this don’t seem to realise that the money to replace the windows comes from ratepayers. This money could be used for better things in the borough.”

The UUP representative added: “The police have said patrols will be stepped up in the area and they intend to catch those responsible. I’d urge parents to ask where your children are going at night.”

Cllr Vera McWilliam added: “This is ridiculous that this is happening on a regular basis in the town. These incidents should be condemned and parents should realise what their children are up to.”
