Christine Craig, Community Champion at Asda Ballyclare, is supporting the drive to eat local produce as she embarks on the programme as part of Asda’s support for Year of Food and Drink.

Each of Asda’s 16 Community Champions have been educated about Asda’s local sourcing policies and procedures.

This training included a guided store walk to identify the local ranges from food and drink producers across the island of Ireland.

The training is important as the Community Champions are regularly involved in local community work, visiting schools, engaging with senior citizen groups, fundraising and volunteering – with the focus on supporting those who live close to and shop at Asda.

Christine said: “Year of Food and Drink gives a new dimension to our community work.

“Learning more about Asda’s commitment to the local food industry, and seeing how it is brought to life on our shelves, is vital as we can share this at a community level and play our part in supporting NI’s agri-food sector.

“From school visits, healthy eating sessions, fundraisers and involvement in events such as Balmoral Show and Open Farm Weekend, this training has primed us to bring a ‘local flavour’ to our community work throughout NI’s Year of Food and Drink.”
