Ballyclare musician enjoys chart success

Traditional Irish musician Susan Grace Bates is enjoying a fine run of form, as her debut album ‘Skorsa: the Riddle of the Earth’ is attracting listeners from around the globe.

The album is currently placed fourth in the Irish Album Chart, and fourth in the Japanese Album Chart.

Since it was released on June 8, a number of tracks have enjoyed substantial airtime on radio stations throughout the British Isles and further afield.

Three tracks which have received a lot of positive feedback are ‘Maigh Rua’ which is a track Susan wrote for her grandparents, ‘Farewell’ and ‘Cavers’.

Susan is very pleased with how her album has been received and is glad that people are enjoying her music.

“I’m very much overwhelmed by how it is being received and extremely happy. It’s a fantastic feeling to find that people like your music that you have put so much of yourself into,” Susan said.

The album features Susan playing the harp and singing, as well as the musical talents of John McSherry who plays whistles, Donal O’Connor on fiddle, Ross Martin on guitar, David Foley playing the bodhran and Pauline Scanlon with vocals.

With no plans to record a new album just yet, Susan is looking forward to the opportunities that may come to her off the back of her current album.

“I’m excited for the pathways it may help to open up for me in the future,” she added.

Susan, who is about to start the fourth year of her music degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, will be performing at a number of local events in the coming weeks.

She will be performing at the SS Nomadic wedding fair this Sunday,(September 6), Culture Night in Belfast at the John Hewitt Bar at 6pm on Friday 18 and AnDroiched Belfast on Saturday 26 where she will be supporting Zoe Conway.
