The six-week long taking control self-management programme is designed to improve the quality of life for people living with long-term chest, heart and stroke related health conditions.

It’s believed that in Northern Ireland there are around 200,000 people living with those type of conditions which can affect all parts of life and not just their health.

People living with long term health conditions also have to learn to cope with daily life and any changes they might have to make to their work, social or family lives.

“Readjusting can be very difficult on a practical and emotional level,” said Stephen O’Brien, NI Chest, Heart & Stroke’s area services manager.

“If you are one of those 200,000 people, Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke’s taking control self-management programme could be for you.

“It aims to give people with long term conditions the skills to coordinate all the things needed to manage their health, as well as to help them keep active in their lives.”

He added: “This programme provides information and techniques for dealing with problems such as frustration, pain, fatigue and isolation.

“For example, increased exercise or activity and better nutrition can make a difference to someone’s physical and mental well being.

“We teach relaxation techniques and how to cope with feelings of depression. Another key aspect is developing more effective communication with health professionals, family and others.

“It’s important to point out that the programme does not conflict with any existing treatment.

“Instead, it aims to help people develop new skills and techniques that can help them to live with their condition.

“It’s also about working with others. When friends and family know how you are feeling, suddenly you are no longer alone in dealing with you health condition.”

The programme starts on Monday, September 2. Places are free, for further information and to book call Yvonne on 079 1204 6173.
