Ballyearl set to buzz with Bee Safe event

NEXT week will see the 'Bee Safe' initiative buzz into the borough, with over 950 local primary seven pupils attending a community safety event organised by the Newtownabbey PSNI's Community Safety Team.

The Bee Safe event will be delivered at Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre from Monday, May 17 until Friday, May 21, with all 28 local primary schools attending throughout the week-long event.

Bee Safe is an interactive learning experience which uses role play and real life scenarios to teach 10 and 11 year olds how to keep themselves safe and other issues of general social awareness.

Police, along with the Fire Service, Northern Ireland Electricity, Newtownabbey Borough Council's Environmental Health staff and Translink, will be instructing pupils on a wide range of safety issues.

PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector Paula Hilman, commented: "After the wonderful success of our third Bee Safe Week last year, when over 950 children attended, I know that this will be another successful Bee Safe campaign. Our intention is to enlighten children to the dangers around them and teach them not only to protect themselves, but also to keep their friends and family safe. "Police officers will be speaking to the children about important choices relating specifically their safety and behaviour. Our colleagues from the other agencies will be showing them how to keep safe in the home, with fire, electricity, on the roads and on buses. Our thanks once again go to Newtownabbey Borough Council for their support in supplying the facilities and venue for the event."

Funding for Bee Safe 2010 has been provided by Newtownabbey Community Safety Partnership and Newtownabbey Borough Council's Environmental Health Department, while the transport will be provided by Translink.
