Ballymacash residents sick of '˜foul sewer odour'

NI Water has said it's investigating complaints about the smell of sewage in the Ballymacash area of Lisburn.

A local resident took to social media on Monday, February 20 to complain about a “foul sewer odour” on Ballymacash Road and questioned whether the smell was being caused by “commercial discharge”.

Responding to a request from NI Water for more information about the incident, the disgruntled resident replied on Twitter: “You’ve investigated several times over the years and never resolved this daily menace. The residents are sick of it.”

Responding to questions from the Ulster Star, a spokesperson for NI Water gave an assurance that complaints about sewage smells in the Ballymacash area are being investigated.

“NI Water take seriously any concerns raised by customers in relation to odour complaints. We will review the history of odour problems at Ballymacash Road to see if there is anything further we as a company can do to alleviate the problem,” she commented.

“While we can work to maintain the flow of the sewerage system, we need those who use the system, particularly local businesses, to be fully aware of how they are using it, as unauthorised discharges into the sewers can lead to odour and blockage problems,” the spokesperson added.

Lisburn South Councillor Tim Mitchell said he hadn’t received any complaints about the issue, but urged any residents with concerns about sewage smells in the Ballymacash area to contact him so that he can take the issue up on their behalf.
