Ballymena 1914 -The arts of war

The picture above shows some examples of what has become known as ‘trench art’ -artefacts made from the casings of spent shells and other munition items.

Several of the pieces were made by Cullybackey man Robert Letters who served with the Royal Garrison Artillery and later with the Royal Army Service Corps during World War One.

His son Robert, who served with the Trench Mortar Battery in the 36th (Ulster) Division, won the Military Medal for his actions on July 1, 1916.
