Ballymena Floral Art Group annual meeting

BALLYMENA Floral Art Group's AGM on May, 17 opened on a very sad note with Dr Muriel Whitten (Chairman) expressing members' deep sorrow on the recent death of the Group's Secretary, Mrs Ann Sambrook.

Sincere condolences were extended to Ann’s husband and family on behalf of Ballymena Floral Art Group.

Following the reading and signing of club reports, Dr Whitten recounted some of the highlights of the previous year and stated that she considered it an absolute privilege and an honour to be Chairman and expressed thanks to the very supportive committee members.

Best wishes were extended to Mary Knox and Gladys Smyth, OBE, who, as a result of winning The Belminster Trophy at Parkhall in October, will now represent NIGFAS (N. Ireland Group of Flower Arrangement Societies) at the National Show in Harrogate July 9-10.

Members were reminded of the Club’s outing to the Independence Day Celebrations at The Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh on Saturday, July 3 where the WAFA (World Association of Flower Arrangers) elimination competition entitled’ American Beauty’ would be sure to inspire competitors to produce some exciting exhibits to view on the day. The winner of this competition will represent NIGFAS and stage the Honorary exhibit at the World show in Boston in 2011. There will be no garden outing in June this year as it was decided this would be replaced with the visit to the Ulster American Folk Park.

Dr Whitten then drew members’ attention to a beautiful crystal trophy on display which had been presented anonymously to mark the Club’s 35th Coral Anniversary. This would be known, in future, as ‘The Coral Trophy’ and Dr Whitten stated that a decision would be made at a later date as to how this could best be used.

Mr Hugh Carey, Chairman of Ballymena Garden Club gave a very enjoyable slide show presentation of a visit to N Zealand.

Dr Whitten hoped everyone would enjoy the summer recess and looked forward to seeing everyone back again in September.
