Ballymena man to head up University’s Culture and language school

BALLYMENA man, Dr David Barr has been appointed Head of School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Ulster.

David first joined the teaching staff of Ulster in 2005 and has taught on a range of modules including French language, area studies and film studies. He has also taught within the School of Media, Film and Journalism. Whilst working in the Centre for Excellence in Multimedia Language Learning, David piloted a number of technology-enhanced teaching initiatives – some of which are now used by universities throughout the UK. 

Between 2009 and 2011, he was the Teaching and Learning Co-ordinator for the Faculty of Arts and was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Fellowship in 2010.

David is currently the UK representative for the European Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning, as well as a member of the academic advisory board of ReCALL – the Association’s official journal – and a reviewer for two of the other four major international journals in this area. 

As a result of his reputation in multimedia pedagogy, he was awarded WorldCALL 2013 (the worldwide association for Computer Assisted Language Learning), which will be hosted by the University and held in Glasgow. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and a UK-Registered Translator in French. David, whose father, Jackie, is from the Toome Road, was educated at Cambridge House Grammar School, Ballymena. He completed his undergraduate degree in Applied Languages at the University of Ulster and also studied as part of his PhD in the Universities of Cambridge and Toronto.

David is a member of High Kirk Presbyterian Church and, in his spare time, he enjoys most forms of motorsports and is a timekeeping official for the Motorcycle Racing Association of Ireland and the UK Motor Sports Association.
