Ballymena pupils’ artwork goes on show at Stormont

TWO young Ballymena students were among six local primary school pupils from the North Eastern Education and Library Board’s area were the recipients of prizes, praise and commendation at an Art Competition Awards event held at Stormont recently.

The competition, which saw a staggering 2,500 entries from children aged six to 11 years old from across Northern Ireland, was organised by the Northern Ireland Assembly Education Service and supported by the Community Arts Partnership.

For the NEELB area, Niamh Kearney of St Brigid’s Primary, Ballymena, took first place, and fellow pupil at the school, Blazej Lallowski, came third. Principal Deputy Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mr Francie Molloy said: “It has been a tremendous honour to have the opportunity to meet so many vibrant and creative young people. We were absolutely astounded to receive over 2,000 entries to the competition, the first of its kind organised by the Assembly.

“The standard and level of skill and creativity produced by our local pupils has been beyond compare and certainly made the job of the judging panel very difficult indeed,” said Mr Molloy.

The young artists, who were asked to submit a drawing or painting to reflect “Remembering the Titanic” or “My World” , worked alongside top local artists from the Community Arts Partnership and also helped to create two sculptures which will go on display in the Great Hall at Parliament Buildings, alongside the winning artwork until the end of the month.
