Ballymena Samaritans seeking new volunteers

BALLYMENA Samaritans are hosting an information evening starting at 7.30pm on Tuesday, February 22 in the branch in Mount Street, Ballymena, so why not come along and find out if you have what it takes to be a volunteer?

A Samaritans spokesperson said: “The circumstances of some of the callers can be very traumatic. We don’t offer advice, we don’t judge people – what we do is listen to them and try to help them to understand how they feel and hopefully find a way forward.”

The Samaritans are based in branches all over the UK and Ireland and there has been one in Ballymena for many years.

Their service is mostly delivered on the telephone but they do sometimes see callers face-to-face in the branch and more and more they are supporting people by email.

The spokesperson added: “It can be a challenging experience but we will fully prepare you before you become a volunteer.

“Your commitment will be recognized and valued and your skills and experience will be constantly developed.

“With Samaritans you grow as a person.

“Many of our volunteers say it’s the most rewarding thing they have done. – If you’ve ever felt the need to give something back, then now is your chance to help us create a stronger, less isolated society.”
