Ballymena student on victorious University Challenge team

A former Ballymena Academy student has helped his Cambridge University team to victory in the grand final of University Challenge.

Michael Taylor was a member of the Gonville & Caius team which won the renowned television quiz hosted by Jeremy Paxman on Monday night.

He helped them to a 255-105 victory over Magdalen College, Oxford.

His teammate Ted Loveday, from west London, answered a staggering 12 starters for 10 correctly, enough to open up a lead over Magdalen from early on.

Michael previously blitzed opponents at Manchester University with his knowledge of history, literature and music.

The PHD History student said at the time he found the experience “tremendously exciting” - but “eerie”.

“It was a privilege to represent my college and my hometown,” he said.
