Ballymoney police issue fireworks warning

BALLYMONEY Police have issued an earlier than usual pre-Halloween warning that the sale of illegal fireworks and their misuse will NOT be tolerated in the run up to October 31.

This follows several complaints to the PSNI in the town in the past few days about bangers being fired off on local streets.

Inspector David Anderson said: “The law clearly states that fireworks must be bought from a licensed dealer who is required to keep sales records.

“Fireworks bought from other sources could be a sub-standard quality with the potential to cause serious injury.

“Lots of people enjoy firework displays and most pass off without incident, however, points to keep in mind when using fireworks include:

* Fireworks that do not have instructions printed in English are illegal.

* All bangers are illegal.

* The purchase, possession of, use of fireworks without a licence is an offence.

“Our advice to individuals planning firework displays is to deal with registered and licensed traders and seek their specialist knowledge,” said Inspector Anderson.

He added: “Pet owners are asked to keep their animals in a safe environment during firework displays as they can find the noise and lights very unsettling.

“We would also appeal to the community to help us stamp out illegal trading and misuse of fireworks by contacting local police on 08456008000 or Crimestoppers on 0800555111,” said the Inspector.
