Ballymoney students enjoy STEM Workshops

Local Schools, including Ballymoney students, recently took part in Interactive STEM Workshops at Northern Regional College StemFest.

As part of the NI Science Festival, Northern Regional College held another successful STEMFest event at the Coleraine Campus.

Over 100 Year 10 students from Dalriada Grammar School, Ballymoney High School and St Paul’s College were provided an insight into STEM related industries through participating in six interactive workshops.

Workshops included learning to combine programming and lego; design your own building using a modern architectural drawing software package; practical exercise using civil engineering equipment; learn the science behind some of the industry’s best selling moisturisers and bath bombs.

Students also learn how to analyse the use of carbohydrate and fat consumption and integrate current trends and nutrition training techniques based on a ‘live’ 15 minute treadmill plus have a hands-on experience of using a virtual welder.

Dr Catherine O’Mullan, Director of Curriculum at Northern Regional College explained: “Northern Regional College was delighted to welcome so many students to the STEM event at Coleraine campus.

“This is the second year that college based STEM workshops have been part of the prestigious NI Science festival.

“Students had the opportunity to experience a range of practical activities and skills in Science and Technology subjects, which they found enjoyable and educational.

“The college STEM based courses focus on the practical and industrial applications of the subjects and promote employment opportunities in areas such as Life Sciences, Computing, technology , Engineering and Sports Science.”
