Ballymoney to light up Blue for Autism

BALLYMONEY Borough Council has signed up to support Autism NI by getting involved in this year’s ‘Light It Up Blue’ campaign during World Autism Month, joining 22 other councils throughout Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The local Chamber of Commerce has also lent its support for the initiative with local shops featuring blue in their window displays.

Council will launch the Ballymoney Campaign at Council’s Civic Headquarters on Thursday and its Town Hall, the base for many local groups, events and community activities, will be illuminated in blue.

Ballymoney’s first citizen Evelyne Robinson said: “We are pleased to host this event in Ballymoney for the first time and to “light up blue” a key community facility, helping to highlighting this ‘hidden disability’ and giving those affected the recognition they deserve”.

Adding the support of the local business community to the event Chamber President Winnifred Mellett commented: “We are pleased to join with the Council in sending out a message of support for the work being done on the ground to offer help and support to families dealing with the disability and I hope our efforts will serve to create better awareness and understanding.”

Autism is a lifelong disability which affects the way an individual relates to people, situations and the immediate environment. World Autism Awareness month, during April, shines a bright light on Autism as a growing global health concern and the unique talents and skills of people with Autism.
