Ballynure is left spick and span after clean-up

ON SATURDAY, April 10, taking advantage of the lovely sunny weather, 27 eager litter pickers and Easter egg hunters took part in the annual Ballynure Village Clean-Up and Easter Egg Hunt.

The event was organised by Ballynure & District Community Association, with support from Newtownabbey Borough Council - who provided the litter-picking materials, as well as local traders, who donated prizes and refreshments.

The enthusiastic collectors, (pictured above), managed to fill 28 bin bags full of litter from around the village.

Prizes of large Easter eggs for the most bags collected went to Jaimie McCowan, Neave and Rebecca Graham, and Emma and Helen Downey.

Beechview Developments and Cherith House Group kindly donated the large prize eggs. The mini eggs were provided by Jackson’s Butchers and Ballynure Co-op, and soft drinks by Beattie's Restaurant.

Thanks are also due to Nessie Armstrong, Jean Cameron and Catherine Watson, who provided refreshments in Christ Church Hall for the hungry egg hunters after the clean-up.

After achieving third place in last year’s Ulster in Bloom competition, Ballynure is again entering both this and the Best Kept Village competitions in 2010.

This was the Community Association's first event of the year towards brightening up the village before judging at the end of June.

It is hoped to organise another clean-up, along with planting of village flower tubs in early June. The Committee is also looking forward to the annual Tug-of-War competition as part of the 2010 Village Fair, to be held in the Church of Ireland Rectory field on June 19.
