Banbridge Historical Society set for talk on castle

The next meeting of Banbridge Historical Society will be held in The Old Town Hall on Thursday 1st October at 7.30pm when David Anderson will give a talk on ‘Recollections of Hillsborough Castle’.

Hillsborough Castle began life as the country home of the Hill family.

Following the Irish Free State Act of 1922 the Britsh Monarch appointed a Governor for Northern Ireland and Hillsborough Castle became his official residence.

Earl Granville was appointed Governor in 1945. His wife, Lady Rose Bowes-Lyon was Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother’s sister.

As a result The Queen, The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret spent many happy holidays in Hillsborough Castle.

The first meeting between The Queen and Mary McAleese, then President of Ireland, occurred at Hillsborough Castle in 2009.

On April 1st 2014 Historic Royal Palaces took over responsibility for the management of Hillsborough Castle.

Membership of Banbridge Historical Society costs £15 per annum.

Visitors are always very welcome and are charged £3 which includes the night’s entertainment and light refreshments.
