Banbridge to be awash with colour

BANBRIDGE will come alive with colourful costumes and Mardi Gras style music on Saturday September 11 as the Council's newest cross-community event takes to the streets.

The ‘Carnival of Colour’, launched this week, promises an energetic and exciting carnival atmosphere with a rainbow of international-inspired spectacle. The event is supported by the EU’s PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the Southern Partnership.

Expect a little bit of ‘Rio’ to wind its way through the streets of Banbridge, with a marvellous Mardi Gras style parade including spirited Samba Bands, Chinese Dragon Dances, Cuban Salsa music and dancing and local children in colourful costumes.

Council Chairman, Jim McElroy said, “We wanted to create a vibrant, thrilling and animated cross-community event, with a liberal dash of international fantasy and I am pleased to announce that the new ‘Carnival of Colour’ will do exactly that. It truly will be a colourful, not-to-be missed spectacle and is the perfect platform to celebrate the bright and prosperous future ahead for Banbridge.

“We were determined to enhance our events programme which already includes such highlights as Buskfest Banbridge and the ‘Carnival of Colour’ has been the inspired result. We are also delighted to have the support of the EU PEACE III programme for funding to help make this wonderful event happen.”

Michelle Brown, Town Centre Manager is excited about the event’s potential. “The inaugural 2010 event will create a platform from which we can develop a host of themes, attractions and opportunities for our local rate payers and for visitors to the town," she said.

"Research demonstrates the importance of major attractions in building tourism business and the ‘Carnival of Colour’ promises to play an important part in growing our tourism economy. This is great news not only for our already vibrant hospitality sector but for all town centre traders. The involvement of young people is also to be applauded and encouraged and we look forward to showcasing some wonderful talent and creativity.”
