Banned for not having insurance

When he was stopped for driving without having insurance, a 25-year-old man claimed he had just bought the car at auction.

Covaliu Cosmin, Albert Street, Lurgan, was banned from driving for six months last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

The defendant was also fined £200 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for driving without insurance on January 25 this year.

The court heard that at approximately 4pm, a police mobile patrol was warned the defendant’s car may not have insurance.

Police checks confirmed this and issued a fixed penalty notice but because Cosmin had points on his licence it did not apply.

The defendant said he had only bought the car at an auction and had not transferred his insurance.

But it transpired he was only a named driver on a friend’s policy of insurance.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendant, said his client did have insurance in respect of other vehicles.

He explained that Cosmin did attempt to pay the fixed penalty but could not because

of the points he already had.

Mr Downey added that he defendant knew as a result of the court proceedings he would not be driving for some time.
