Bannside needs '˜fair share' of new road cash says Gaston

The Bannside area needs to get a '˜fair share' of new money released to help improve rural roads, says local TUV councillor, Timothy Gaston.

He was speaking after Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard announced a £10million investment to improve the condition of rural roads

Cllr. Gaston said: “I welcome the £10m investment, it is much needed but will only go a little way to improve the roads after many years of under investment in basic maintenance.

“Rural Bannside has been neglected, and it is only right that it gets its fair share of investment to improve the roads.

“In particular Glarryford and Cullybackey areas are particularly bad due to the extra pressure that has resulted from the A26 dualling and Woodtown Cross improvements which has diverted huge traffic volumes onto these rural roads. It is a step in the right direction, but sustained investment in maintenance is required long-term.”

The Minister said: “The Department is currently considering areas in greatest need and will draw up programmes to enable work to start as soon as possible.”
