Barbour Nursery’s new Butterfly Garden

Peppa Pig officially opened the garden which was funded through the ‘Awards for All’ Big Lottery scheme at a cost of over £10,000.

The garden includes a mini assault course, a pond, wild flower meadow, large tunnel, role play area and landscaping with trees and shrubs.

Principal, Tracey Cassells, explained: “We consulted with children, parents and staff to design an environmentally friendly outdoor play space where children could use natural materials to explore and learn.

“We are extremely pleased with the results and are already seeing the benefits for the children as they embrace the challenges of learning outdoors and encourage wildlife into our garden”.

“In a city area such as Lisburn there are limited opportunities for children to study wildlife and learn about how to look after our environment in a safe and child-friendly way.

“Nursery classes are constantly having to think of innovative ways to teach important life skills to protect our world for the future.

“Funding from sources such as the Big Lottery is vital to ensure that schools can undertake projects such as this, and we are very grateful for all the support given.”
