Councillor Barr said he was made aware of the incident outside the Ballyward Polling Station by a text message from a concerned constituent. He then contacted the PSNI who sent officers.

Councillor Barr said he was then informed that the PSNI had spoken with the person concerned and had left, however the representative still had the hurley stick.

Councillor Barr said: “I cannot understand why anyone would want to stand at a polling station with something that can be perceived to be intimidating.

“I will not stand idly by whilst Provisional Sinn Fein adapt these bully boy tactics.

“I made a formal complaint to the presiding officer and informed my Party HQ.”
