Be safe in the sun this summer

The project aimed to encourage people to take care in the sun whilst educating them on the dangers of UV rays.

Council's Environmental Health team, working in partnership with the Ulster Cancer Foundation, advised beach goers on the shores of the North Coast to cover up, take shade and wear sun cream during the summer months.

The Ulster Cancer Foundation were also on hand to encourage people to take care in the sun and offer free skin scanner tests, to highlight any skin damage already incurred.

Carbon Monoxide tests were also available which tested smokers' lung capacity before offering a follow-up smoking cessation advice service.

Debbie Keys, Health and Wellbeing Officer for Coleraine Borough Council was delighted by the success of the scheme.

She said: "The month-long initiative proved to be very successful with 705 people receiving sun safety information, advice, health checks and information packs, kindly donated by Boots Chemist Coleraine.

"We hope that locals and visitors to the Borough during the summer months are able to enjoy some sunshine but remember to do so in a safe and responsible manner."
