Be SunSmart for Run Together

THE Ballymoney Cancer Research Committee is hoping for good weather at the Run Together Ballymoney 2010 on Friday but are also calling on people to remember to remain 'SunSmart' in the run up to the summer season.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing and more than 2,300 people die from it each year, mainly from malignant melanoma.

Cancer Research UK is the largest funder of skin cancer research in the UK and their broad research programme ranges from uncovering the causes of the disease to developing new treatments for patients plus they are heavily involved in raising public awareness of skin cancer though their national SunSmart campaign which aims to inform people about staying safe in the sun.

Mervyn Ferris, Chair of the Ballymoney Committee, stresses the importance of enjoying the sun safely: "It's important to look after ourselves when the sun's out. Sunburn is a sign of damage.

“The redness may fade but the damage is still permanent. A few things you can do include staying in the shade between 11 and 3, and aim to cover up with a t-shirt, hat and sunglasses. Make sure you never burn and never use a sunscreen below factor 15 and remember to take extra care with children".
