Beech tree kicks off celebrations

LURGAN'S 400 celebrations began with the planting of a Purple Beech tree in Lurgan Park on Monday.

Lurgan is 400 years old this year and Craigavon Borough Council in association with the business and local community are holding a series of events to mark the milestone.

The first of these events was the planting of the Purple Beech at the Colebrookdale Fountain.

The Purple Beech replaces the 100 year old Beech tree, the focus of much discussion, which had to be felled last month because it was diseased.

Events to celebrate Lurgan 400 include Lurgan 400 Artefacts Day, a Mayor’s Garden Party and weekend of fun, a continental Christmas market, local history lectures, writing and photographic competitions for local school children and a programme of enhanced sporting events.

Members of the Lurgan 400 Steering Group include Lurgan Councillors and representatives from Lurgan Forward, the Lurgan Mail and council officers.
