Beechlawn School voted best Breakfast Club in UK

Judges of the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards were awed by the efforts of teachers and pupils at Beechlawn secondary school, where the Breakfast Club has become a fundamental part of students’ education.

Pupils running the club, which was set up in 2010, purchase the stock, record sales, calculate costs and lodge money in the bank to ensure the club is financially viable.

Kellogg’s Alison Last said: “Beechlawn’s Breakfast Club is brilliant. Menus adhere to guidelines on healthy food, children are given food hygiene training, and ‘working’ at the Breakfast Club gives the pupils first-hand experience of what it’s like to work in a small business.”

Beechlawn school, where almost half of students (47%) are entitled to free school meals, caters to children with additional educational needs including Dyslexia, ASD and Down Syndrome.

Principal Barbara Green said: “We’re delighted to win this award, and it shows that the hard work of our students and staff has paid off. The Breakfast Club has helped improve pupils’ concentration, aided their learning experience and improved their social interaction skills.”

Teachers and pupils have been invited to an awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament in December. The £2,000 prize money will be used towards extra equipment and first aid training for students.
