Beggs urges rewards to catch lead thieves

ALDERMAN Roy Beggs wants Larne council to offer rewards for information leading to the detection and conviction of vandals and lead thieves.

The UUP representative asked officers to check the legality of the move, saying he believed the council should let it be seen that it was making every effort to prevent damage and to bring those responsible to account.

The veteran Larne Lough councillor spoke out after it was revealed the council’s insurer had declined to cover the £1,800 cost of repairing the roof at the Town Park pavilion. Thieves had stolen lead on February 22, resulting in damage to a large number of Bangor blue slates.

Ald Beggs also suggested that council officers should alert local scrap merchants of any future metals thefts and “seek their cooperation”.
