Beggs welcomes Ulster Unionist leadership role for Mike Nesbitt

EAST Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has given his backing to the newly elected leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, Mike Nesbitt.

Former broadcaster Mr Nesbitt was named leader of the party at the weekend, defeating South Down Assembly member John McCallister by 536 votes to 129 at the UUP annual general meeting in Belfast.

And local UUP man Mr Beggs said he was “impressed” by Mr Nesbitt’s contribution to the party and welcomed the “overwhelming support” shown to the new leader.

“Mike Nesbitt MLA has already impressed many party members and members of the public through his contribution at Stormont,” Mr Beggs added.

“But, what has most impressed me is how he conducted his recent consultation into economic policy during a meeting within East Antrim. His grasp of the economy was apparent. Mike was very skilful in engaging with the members of the public who were contributing to the event, clarifying issues, and gaining a consensus on what improvements were necessary to create opportunities for all.

“I backed Mike from the start and am pleased that so many other members of the Ulster Unionist party also saw how he could be an effective leader and contribute to improving Northern Ireland for the benefit of all.”
