Belfast International Airport apprenticeship for Whitehead man

Robin Kitchen and colleagues were selected from over 240 expressions of interest. They are undergoing a two-year training period when they will have the opportunity to learn about the range of career options at the airport.

Eight apprentices were recruited last year but because of continuing growth, the decision was taken to undertake a second round of recruitment with those selected starting this year.

Jaclyn Coulter, Belfast International Airport Human Resources manager, pointed out the apprentices will gain BTEC certificate in Aviation on the Ground; Level 2 diploma in Aviation on the Ground; Aviation Fire Fighter Initial certificate; LGV licence and First Aid certificate.

Ms Coulter said: “These qualifications are a ‘passport’ to employment in any airport throughout the world. The training they get here is second to none. We’re delighted to say that our first group is now on our payroll, and enjoying the varied, challenging but hugely satisfying work in a dynamic environment.

“During their training, they get to learn about every aspect of what we do here – from what happens on the apron, with aircraft arriving and departing, to the various disciplines that are needed to be a firefighter.

“We hope that later this year, we will be in a position to advertise for a further eight apprentices. So, if you want a career that’s like no other, keep an eye out for the advertisement.”
