Bell rings up victory at Galgorm President's Day

THERE was a good turnout of golfers for Mr Des Cousley's President's Day, held at Galgorm Castle Golf Club recently.

At halfway John O'Kane (11) and Geoffrey Adams (20) held a slender one point lead over Peter Houston (11) who in turn had a one point lead over Garrett Bell (4), Campbell McAnally (13) and Gary Kenna (9). They were followed by Mark Dunlop (5) who was another point behind.

Through 12, Adams was two points ahead of Bell, McAnally, Houston, O'Kane and Kenna with Dunlop another two points behind. Bell closed the gap to one point when he parred thirteen to a bogey by Adams.

Through Beechers and with three to play Adams was still leading by one point from Bell with McAnally another point behind. Kenna was a further point down with Houston, O'Kane and Dunlop trying hard to catch the leaders, another point adrift.

Bell upped the tempo over the closing holes and came home with three pars for Overall victory by two points. Adams lost his chance for victory when he 'dinged' the last and finished level with O'Kane (bogey, par, par), Houston (par, bogey,

bogey) and McAnally (three bogeys). McAnally with a better back nine took the runners-up spot.

Houston, with a better back nine, won Division 1 with O'Kane second. Dunlop (two pars and a bogey) and Kenna (bogey, double bogey, par) finished one point behind and with a better back nine, Dunlop took third place. Adams won Division 3.

In Division 2 at the turn Henry Cubitt (12) and Graham Simms (16) held a one point advantage from Trevor Monaghan (14) with Robert Beggs (14) another two points behind.

Approaching 14, Monaghan had turned his one point deficit into a two point advantage over Simms. Cubitt ('ding' at 11) was another two points down with Beggs ('ding' at 11) a further point behind.

Playing steady golf, Monaghan had opened a four point gap from Simms through 16 with Beggs and Cubitt at one point intervals respectively behind.

Monaghan 'dinged' the last but still came home three points clear of his nearest challengers. Beggs (bogey, par, bogey, Cubitt (bogey, par, par) and Simms (two bogeys, double bogey) finished together and with a better back nine, Beggs finished second with Cubitt (better back six) third.

At halfway in Division 3 Geoffrey Adams (20) was one point ahead of Robert Deane (21) who was one point ahead of William Kennedy (22) and Noel McAlynn (19).

Through twelve McAlynn had moved up to join Adams to lead by one point from Deane and Kennedy. After 16, Adams had

opened up a three point lead over Deane and McAlynn with Kennedy another point behind after a 'ding' at 16.

Adams' lead was reduced to one point at the next hole which he double bogeyed. Deane took advantage of this slip with a par to move to within a point.

Both players 'dinged' 18 which meant that Adams took first place by one point from Deane as neither Kennedy (double bogey, bogey) nor McAlynn (two double bogeys) were able to capitalise on the aforementioned 'dings'. Kennedy, with a better back six, came home in third place another point behind.

David Kernohan (+3) won the Gross prize with 36 points and Wilson McVeigh (6) took the Seniors’ prize with a 38-point haul.
