Bellaghy plans two-day event to mark Seamus Heaney anniversary

Plans are at an advanced stage in Bellaghy to commemorate and celebrate the life of Seamus Heaney to mark the first anniversary of his death on August 30.

“The Poetry House – An Anniversary Celebration of the Life of Seamus Heaney” will be dedicated to remembering Seamus in the place that inspired his life’s work and is his final resting place.

The two day event on Saturday and Sunday August (30-31), will feature a number of honorific and celebratory events.

A Ceremony of Reflection will be held on Saturday afternoon at the graveside followed by a procession through Bellaghy to the Turf Man Sculpture at Bellaghy Bawn where there will be an interdenominational choir service. The Bawn is the main venue for the weekend and will be open for talks and tours throughout the event.

Sunday will see a Poetry Hooley take place with established poets and writers working together with local people from across the generations to write and read their work in an open and supportive environment. There will also be bus tours of Heaney Country.
