Bellaghy student admits lying to police to protect boyfriend

A final year university student from Bellaghy has been fined £215 for obstructing police because of “a sense of misplaced loyalty towards her boyfriend”.

She was warned by District Judge White at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Oct 22, the case was so serious, it could have been before the Crown Court.

Poppy Buchanan, from Bawnmore, admitted lying to a police constable on February 8, in order to help her boyfriend cover up an offence that he had committed while driving his black Toyota Starlight.

The 20-year-old woman, the court heard, had reported the vehicle as stolen to police and also said it belonged to her, when it was neither.

The languages student later admitted what she had done, and in light of her previous good character as highlighted by her defence, Judge White handed down only a financial penalty.
