Cocker spaniel Daisy was swept away by the river just over three weeks ago, when she ran down some steps during a walk and ended up in the water.

After owner Sian Parry posted details of the incident on Facebook, the story was shared thousands of times and dozens of volunteers took to the river bank to comb the area.

Other members of the public searched the area using drones and kayaks.

However, Sian’s father Steve revealed that the family had received a call today (Tuesday February 2) from a member of the public who spotted Daisy’s body near Ship Street at the harbour.

“The whole family is distraught but at least we have found her and we can get her cremated and do our best for her,” Steve told the Times.

“She has turned up so we can now move on and we will have her ashes.

“We would like to thank the people of Larne and elsewhere who have followed the story and supported us.”

Posting on Facebook, Daisy’s heartbroken owner Sian wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce some bad news.

“Our beautiful Daisy has been found by the beachy area of Ship Street and sadly isn’t alive.

“I wished more than anything that we would find her and that she would be alive but at least we have her back.

“She can now rest in peace and will no longer be alone.

“My family and I want to thank every single person who helped in whatever way they could.

“We are beyond grateful and it’s astounding how much the Larne community and dog lovers have came together these last three weeks.

“It’s amazing!

“We gave our everything and exhausted every avenue to find our girl so we can start grieving knowing we, and everyone else, did our upmost to find her.

“Rest in peace Daisy, we had the best time loving you and you gave us so much joy.

“We adored you and had such a strong bond.

“Never did a moment go by when you didn’t make us smile.

“I hope the universe takes care of your happy, warm-hearted spirit.”

After the announcement was posted, Sian’s Facebook page was flooded with sympathetic messages.

Lynsey Davidson wrote: “So sorry to hear this, you have tried very hard to get your wee pet home.

“She is a peace now you’ve found her.

“You can now try to come to terms with your loss and stop searching.

“Thoughts are out to you, so much loss and grief is a true reflection of how much joy she brought to your lives.”

Jo-Ann Carson added: “So sorry to read this, but relieved for you and your family that you know she is at peace.

“RIP Daisy, run free over the rainbow bridge.”
