‘Below inflation’ rise in Lisburnrates expected

LISBURN City Council is expected to increase the rate for the coming year by below the level of inflation.

It is expected to rise by just below 4% for the next year. The rate of inflation currently stands at 4.2%.

Alderman Paul Porter said everyone on the council had worked hard to keep the rates as low as possible, whilst at the same time ensuring front line services are maintained.

“This year has been unprecedented in regard to the number of meetings that have been held to discuss the rates,” he said.

“My senior party colleagues, including group leader William Leathem, have held many meetings with council officers to ensure we have the lowest possible rates.

“In 2005 we gave a commitment to the people of Lisburn that we would do everything in our power to deliver below inflation rates rises.

“We have worked hard with all parties on the council to do just that,” he continued.

“The business community are finding things difficult and we want to make sure we send out the message that Lisburn is open for business. “The message is very clear,” he continued, “Lisburn City Council is continuing to run a very effective, efficient service but at the lowest possible rates.”

Lisburn City Council will formally strike the rates on Monday evening (February 6)
