Bereavement issuesreach Parliament

East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell along with the President of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) William Millar, from Coleraine, attended the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Funerals and Breavement held in the Houses of Parliament last month.

William Millar, who works for Ivan Murdock and Sons in the town, thanked all those present for their work in putting funeral and bereavement issues firmly on Parliament’s agenda.

He said: “The Work and Pensions Select Committee in the House of Commons announced that it will be holding an inquiry into bereavement benefits.

“The NAFD welcomed news of the inquiry as the Association has long campaigned for a review of the Social Fund funeral payment.

“The Association will be submitting evidence on behalf of its members. The Committee is also examining how bereavement benefits will be affected by the introduction of Universal Credit.”

Mr Campbell added: “I was pleased to attend the event along with William which provided an opportunity for MP’s and Members of the House of Lords to discuss funeral and bereavement issues currently affecting this sector. “
