Mr Simpson said: “Not only does such reckless activity put the lives of those involved in danger, it also poses a threat to other road users.

“This is particularly of concern in rural areas considering the summer silage harvest is ongoing, and agricultural machinery will be on the roads at late hours.

“Therefore, whilst it may seem like harmless fun to some on our rural roads – it is every bit as dangerous as if it were in the town itself.”

He went onto say, “We have all seen the DOE road accident awareness campaigns on television.

“They are a graphic and stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving,

“I would ask those involved to consider the messages, and to take stock of the situation. Not only could you lose your license but you are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.

“In the last two years one quarter of all deaths on our roads have been young men aged 17-24, I ask the young people involved, is it really worth it?”

“I would ask anyone affected or concerned by this behaviour to take note of the vehicle registrations and location and contact the PSNI on 101. It is important that this behaviour is tackled before the tragic consequences are realised.”

Chief Inspector Davy Beck for the area based in Lurgan said: “We are aware of these concerns and we would ask that any information regarding those involved in such dangerous or inconsiderate driving is immediately passed to police on the 101 number.

“As well as causing a general nuisance, those involved are posing a real danger to themselves and other road users. We understand the detrimental effect this behaviour has on others and our message is that bad driving standards will not be tolerated.

“These drivers should realise that if they are taken to court, their licences may be at risk and the loss of a licence could impact on their entire future.”
