Bid to urge young people to Bee Safe

HUNDREDS of P7 children from schools have taken part in an initiative to help them cope with potentially dangerous situations they could face in their everyday lives.

The Bee Safe scheme, funded by Larne District Policing Partnership, aimed to teach youngsters how to prevent accidents and how to deal with them safely and effectively should they occur.

The pupils were taken through simulated scenarios in a controlled environment, urging to think for themselves and develop practical experience of preventing and coping with hazardous situations.

Over 250 P7 children attended the event in Gardenmore Presbyterian Church halls. The multi-agency initiative - involving Larne council, DOE, Fire and Rescue Service, PSNI, Translink and Northern Ireland Electricity - provided information on a wide range of issues including fire safety, internet safety, home safety, electricity, roads and environmental safety.

As part of the event, a competition was run to test what the children had learned. The winners were Conor Kelly from Carnlough Integrated Primary and Rachael Forsythe from Olderfleet Primary School, who each took home a mountain bike.
